Damien Rice在2003年发行了个人的首张专辑《O》，专辑刚发行，变让Damien Rice红遍了非主流音乐界。成为一位知名的唱作人。不但是国外，在我们中国Damien Rice的FANS也是相当的多，我记着前俩年，几乎各各论坛都会有人去发Damien Rice《O》专辑中的歌曲，简直可以用泛滥来形容。同时也让大家重新认识了Damien Rice所演绎的爱尔兰的音乐。这张新专辑命名为《9》，又是以极其简单的方式面向大家。新专辑《9》将在11月3号在爱尔兰首先发行，而后是11月6号将在英国和欧洲地区发行，最后的11月14号才会在美国正式发行。至于我们中国...估计2007年的11月吧。呵呵，玩笑话。来看看新专辑，整整10首歌曲。风格继续延续上张专辑的风格民谣，独流流行和Singer/ Songwriter。不同的是，这张专辑有2首非常突出的歌曲，分别是Rootless Trees和Me, My Yoke and I，突出之处在于别与他们以前的风格，这俩首歌曲特别摇滚，有点Indie Rock的感觉，听后，给我一种很新鲜的感觉，演绎的摇滚曲风原来也很不错。

相对这张专辑的风格，我可以给这俩首歌曲满分。原因就是非常特别。剩下的歌曲，就是Damien Rice以往的风格，第一首歌曲9 Crimes，是一首以钢琴为主旋律配带着提琴的忧伤抒情歌曲，继续加上和Lisa Hannigan的女声和唱，专辑开篇便给我们一种熟悉的感觉，仿佛是上张专辑中的歌曲。专辑中Lisa Hannigan同样也参与了很多合声和合唱的部分。这点与上张仍然一样。Elephant是木吉他小调的歌曲，Damien Rice又在一次展示了他的嗓音，就像是清唱一样。专辑的最后一首是Sleep Don't Weep，一首近6分钟的歌曲，Damien Rice只演唱了小部分，接下来是Lisa Hannigan演唱了一小部分，剩下了结尾曲，在钢琴和Lisa Hannigan的合声中结束了整张专辑。

从U2主唱Bono嘴里说出来的话，一般会有很多人买帐。在前不久U2的一次纽约演唱会上，Bono向在场的所有人这样形容当晚的嘉宾Damien Rice：“你将要听到的Damien Rice就如同60年代初期的Bob Dylan，或是70年代初的Cat Stevens和James Taylor，以及另外一些非常出色的歌者。他拥有那种足以平息一场暴风雨的淡然魅力。他真是个非凡的天才！我几乎无法相信世界上竟然真的会有这样的人存在。”

不管Bono此番话是出自几分真心，他的基本意思大多数人应该是可以认同的：Damien Rice确实是这几年来出现的一位颇为难得的歌者。3年前的首张专辑《O》不仅成功的奠定了Damien Rice新民谣唱作人的身份，而且一举为他在口碑和销量上获得了双丰收。凭借《O》，Damien Rice在那一年当仁不让的挤进了Sufjan Stevens、Sigur Ros和TV on the Radio等尖子生的行列，专辑中的几首单曲，比如“The Blower's Daughter”和“Cannonball”被日后频繁的用作电影、电视剧中的主题歌或插曲，Damien Rice一时间变得家喻户晓中外驰名。

　　其实，细想想Damien Rice的成功其实很简单。在他的音乐中，人们最欣赏的无非就是那份极为淡然的情感流露。用钢琴、木吉他、大提琴等最简单的乐器来陪衬，搭配Damien Rice娓娓诉说的唱腔。他惯用自己的音量来控制歌曲的情绪发展。这其中不存在任何一点你不知道或者听不出来的繁杂。他的嗓音会让大多数人的耳膜有舒适的按摩感，时而极近，有如他就站在你的身边只为你一人而唱；时而又极远，仿佛那歌声是随着风从远方飘来的。Rice是个唱苦情歌的(至少在《O》里是这样的)，然而决不是那种俗套的口水歌或者半死不活的调调。他的作品大多有苦甜参半的优美旋律，像民谣，但又比传统民谣高贵和隐忍一些。像Damien Rice这样的，深得时下那些听流行嫌俗听摇滚又嫌吵的小白领们的亲睐。

　　时隔三年，Damien Rice在今年11月发行了第二张正式专辑《9》。在标题上延续了上张《O》的极简风格，那么内容上呢？大方向上Rice选择了保险起见的重复《O》的套路——毕竟这还只是他的第二张专辑；而在细节上他为我们带来了不小的惊喜。从一个有能力出唱片的人的角度来说，他一定会希望能在每张新专辑中都做出些新意——无论这种变化是人为的还是水到渠成的。尤其像Damien Rice这么一个新贵唱作人，首专就使自己名声雀起，在此之后的第二张确实需要谨慎斟酌。

　　比较两张专辑你会发现，从《O》到《9》，这是一个还算自然发展的过程。《O》中那些招牌式的元素大多还可以在《9》里找到踪影：优美流畅的编曲，朴实无华的原声器乐，Rice随情节发展时大时小的音量模式。而在新专辑中，它们已经不再是全部支柱和特点了。如果说《O》中的Rice是个有点文弱的苦情男，那么到了《9》中，Rice则一边继续苦情而一边以硬朗的愤怒来回应苦情。这让我想起了以前听过Damien Rice翻唱Radiohead的“Creep”，他以纯粹的苦情男频道演绎这首歌总让我觉得有点怪。而现在，Rice在自己的专辑中向很多人证明了这点，他也是条可以摇滚起来的汉子！而且绝对有鼻子有眼的。这是整张专辑最大的亮点。

　　《9》中Damien Rice依旧启用了在首专《O》中起到极大添彩作用的女声Lisa Hannigan和大提琴手Vyvienne Long。专辑同名歌曲“9 Crimes”在第一时间就深深的将听者沦陷了：极富Damien Rice苦情风味的钢琴旋律，先引出的是Hannigan气若游丝的悲戚嗓音，然后第2段才响起Rice那隐忍而磁性的声音。两个人的声音彼此缠绕的上升，弦乐将整首歌推向高潮。旋律美得一塌糊涂，甚至要好过《O》中任何一首知名单曲；在此之后的“The Animals Were Gone”明显比前一首平淡了太多，落差感让人觉得这不过是一首念白式的乡村民谣，其中的爱意倒颇显甜蜜；“Elephant”是首典型Damien Rice结构作品，发展过程呈开口向下的抛物线状：开始时人声和吉他都是生怕让人听见的状态，然后曲调逐渐爬升人声和吉他也逐渐放开手脚，之后大气的鼓和电吉他带来高潮，最后一切又回复到开始时悄悄的状态；第4首“Rootless Tree”一定会让很多人大跌眼镜，因为它第一次让人们见识到了貌似过于儒弱的Damien Rice也是会发飙的。以一段甜美的吉他solo开始，你完全不会猜到后面会发生什么。Chorus时Rice伴着给劲的电吉他，瞬间变了一个人似的狠狠的不断重复着“Fuck U Fuck U”，一扫他平时留给人们那种只会自己拧巴不会对外发泄的“苦情男人”印象；第6首“Coconut Skins”也采用了Damien Rice作品中鲜有的明快节奏，带来了几分美国西部乡村摇滚的味道，他大大咧咧的甩着嗓子“La~La~La~”，就像牛仔一样酷；之后的“Me, My Yoke and I”是整张专辑中Rice转形最为成功的一首歌，一上来便直接是闷骚的电吉他，Rice越唱调越高，最后逐渐变成摇滚式的嘶叫，高潮部分的感觉十分像早期的PJ Harvey，粗砺的爆发力一定会将大部分“大米迷”击昏，不失为是Damien Rice至今最摇滚的一支作品；High曲过后，迅速转回常规Damien Rice 频道的“Grey Room”显得有些平庸；而在第9首“Accidental Babies”中，伴着深邃忧郁的钢琴旋律，我们再次看到了那个让人心碎到无以复加的男人。在演绎此类拿手曲目时，Rice似乎比《O》时更为游刃有余了。专辑的收场曲“Sleep Don’t Weep”貌似有点儿充数的嫌疑，虽然同样很柔很美，但这种柔美有点让人想睡觉。

　　从《9》中我们看到，Damien Rice是个可以让人有盼头的唱作人。尽管那几首几乎毫无新意可言的充数作品阻止了《9》彻底成为一张具有大胆创新意味的专辑，然而可以到达这个尺度，达到这种效果，Damien Rice这次已经成功了。不管是苦情的还是摇滚的，他慷慨的与我们分享了更多的可能性。Damien Rice从《O》开始，这张《9》会让他走的更好。
